Identificatienummers

With the introduction of the 140 series, Volvo also introduced a new system of model designation. The first number identified which model it was, the second number identified the number of cylinders, and the third number identified the number of doors. The designation system occupied the first three numbers of the chassis number of each car.
The remaining numbers of the chassis number specified each car's equipment. The letter at the end of the serial number indicates the year model.

The first number identifies the model.

The second number indicates the number of cylinders (in comparison, the Volvo 164, having six cylinders, would be "6").

The third number indicates the number of doors.
2 = two door body
4 = four door body
5 = five door body (station wagon)

The fourth number indentifies the type of engine:
1 = The car is equipped with the B18A engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20A engine.
2 = The car is equipped with the B18D engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20D engine.
3 = The car is equipped with the B18B engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20B engine.
4 = The car is equipped with the fuel injected B20E engine.
6 = The car is equipped with the B20F engine.

The fifth number identifies the body type or the fitting of a sunroof:
1 = Station wagon with glass rear cargo side windows replaced by sheet-metal. Heightened roof.
2 = Base model.
3 = Standard body without sunroof (normal roof).
4 = ?
5 = Standard body with sunroof.
6 = Station wagon with heightened roof.
7 = Station wagon with glass rear cargo side windows. Heightened roof.
8 = GL without sunroof.
9 = GL with sunroof.

The sixth number indicates the type of transmission fitted:
2 = M400 (3.54)
3 = M410 (3.54)
4 = M40/M400 (four-speed)
5 = M41/M410 (four-speed with overdrive)
6 = BW35 (three-speed automatic gearbox)
7 = ?
8 = M40/M400 (four-speed with column-shift gear change)

The seventh number indicates the market:
1 = Left-hand drive.
2 = Right-hand drive.
3 = Left-hand drive excluding California.
4 = Left-hand drive, California only.
8 = Left-hand drive, assembled in Belgium (VENV) and Canada.
9 = Right-hand driven, assembled in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa.

  2. Superfel bedankt! Heb mezelf als eerste auto nu ook een Volvo 142 aangeschaft (1971) maar de handelaar kon niet zeggen welke motor erin lag. Uiteraard duurt het wachten lang (moet nog gekeurd worden en de verzekering geregeld) en dan begin je je die dingen af te vragen. Ik had alleen het chasisnummer dus dit was echt een hele grote hulp!
