The paint colour code identifies the original paint color of the body. The code is found on the vehicle identification plate usually located under the bonnet. The same colour code was used on different Volvo models. For example the dark blue code 96 was used on the Volvo 120 and 140 Series. Of course both are exactly the same colour. Also note that particular colour codes may have more than one colour name for marketing purposes.
Some cars will have -1, -2 or -3 in the paint code, such as 100-1. The -1, -2, -3 refer to a different shade of the colour. -1 being a lighter shade and -3 being a darker shade.
Volvo originally used a 140° Enamel paint, mostly Glasurit or Herberts.
For the repair-market there was an 80° Enamel air-drying paint available.
Volvo's paint codes were changed from December 1988. Both solvent and water based paints are now used on cars. In order to easily identity extra digits have been introduced which indicate if the paint is solvent or water based or has another quality
Exmple: 850 has the paint code 189-21. The first three digits (189 in this case) is for Volvo's colour code 189 Polar White
The fourth digit stands for:
1 = BASF (Glasurit)
2 = Herberts (STANDOX)
3 = Beckers
4 = IDAC/Dupont
5 = Sikkens
6, 7, and 9 = not used
8 = IVI
1 = BASF (Glasurit)
2 = Herberts (STANDOX)
3 = Beckers
4 = IDAC/Dupont
5 = Sikkens
6, 7, and 9 = not used
8 = IVI
The fifth digit stands for:
1 = solvent based
2 = water based Metallic/Pearl + Varnish
3 = water based Solid + Varnish
4 = solvent based Solid + Varnish
5 = solvent based Pearl shine + Varnish*
6 = water based Solid/Metallic/Pearl + 2 component Varnish
7 = water based Solid/Metallic/Pearl + powder Varnish
8, 9 = not used
1 = solvent based
2 = water based Metallic/Pearl + Varnish
3 = water based Solid + Varnish
4 = solvent based Solid + Varnish
5 = solvent based Pearl shine + Varnish*
6 = water based Solid/Metallic/Pearl + 2 component Varnish
7 = water based Solid/Metallic/Pearl + powder Varnish
8, 9 = not used
*Because of the transparent pearl coat this concept includes a solid colour which is applied under the pearl coat
Het gaat dus om kleur 109! Ook weer handig om te weten.

Identificatienummers
Leuke uitleg op het forum tegengekomen!
With the introduction of the 140 series, Volvo also introduced a new system of model designation. The first number identified which model it was, the second number identified the number of cylinders, and the third number identified the number of doors. The designation system occupied the first three numbers of the chassis number of each car.
The remaining numbers of the chassis number specified each car's equipment. The letter at the end of the serial number indicates the year model.
The first number identifies the model.
1421341A
The second number indicates the number of cylinders (in comparison, the Volvo 164, having six cylinders, would be "6").
1421341A
The third number indicates the number of doors.
2 = two door body
4 = four door body
5 = five door body (station wagon)
1421341A
The fourth number indentifies the type of engine:
1 = The car is equipped with the B18A engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20A engine.
2 = The car is equipped with the B18D engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20D engine.
3 = The car is equipped with the B18B engine until 1968. From 1969, the car is equipped with the B20B engine.
4 = The car is equipped with the fuel injected B20E engine.
6 = The car is equipped with the B20F engine.
1421341A
The fifth number identifies the body type or the fitting of a sunroof:
1 = Station wagon with glass rear cargo side windows replaced by sheet-metal. Heightened roof.
2 = Base model.
3 = Standard body without sunroof (normal roof).
4 = ?
5 = Standard body with sunroof.
6 = Station wagon with heightened roof.
7 = Station wagon with glass rear cargo side windows. Heightened roof.
8 = GL without sunroof.
9 = GL with sunroof.
1421341A
The sixth number indicates the type of transmission fitted:
2 = M400 (3.54)
3 = M410 (3.54)
4 = M40/M400 (four-speed)
5 = M41/M410 (four-speed with overdrive)
6 = BW35 (three-speed automatic gearbox)
7 = ?
8 = M40/M400 (four-speed with column-shift gear change)
1421341A
The seventh number indicates the market:
1 = Left-hand drive.
2 = Right-hand drive.
3 = Left-hand drive excluding California.
4 = Left-hand drive, California only.
8 = Left-hand drive, assembled in Belgium (VENV) and Canada.
9 = Right-hand driven, assembled in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa.
